Browns Point is a prime fishing spot at the northern edge of Tacoma’s Commencement Bay that lies on the migration route of Silver and Chinook salmon headed to the Puyallup River for spawning. Point Defiance, which helps define the Dalco Passage, is another well known salmon spot. It benefits from a massive black eddy that forms around the point as water flows out from the Narrows with the outgoing tide. The drift begins near Owen Beach and flows in the direction of the lighthouse.
On an incoming tide, anglers shift north, fishing Point Defiance’s sister hole Point Dalco. Situated on Vashon Island’s south end, this spot features a drift that begins at the ferry dock in 100 feet of water and deepens as it flows toward Point Dalco. Those who prefer fishing from piers can use the public pier at Salty’s Restaurant, though the best trolling is around 100 yards offshore. Experienced anglers begin in the relatively shallow 90 to 100-foot water off the beach, before moving progressively further offshore as the sun emerges and warms the water.
